Despite which store you walk into you will be faced with a number of tool purchasing options. There are a number of well known name brand power tools and also some that you may not have heard of that are considerably cheaper. So, the question is which is better for you, a name brand tool or a discount one?
Tools are expensive, especially if you are looking at power and air operated tools, and you have to ensure you are purchasing power tools that can get your do it yourself project completed. But, does that mean you mindlessly ignore discount tools and buy only the name brand ones?
When you are looking at tools, you may notice something about a few of the discount brands, they are just about identical as the name brand tool, but with a changed label and different name. The quality is exactly the same, but the cost is different. Many manufacturers offer two (or more) levels of tools, one set for the professional who uses their tools daily, and a tool for the do it yourself person who uses it a lot less frequently.
Bosch is a perfect instance of this. They sell the high end tools in a blue case, then sell a lower priced tool in a green case. Then on top of that they make Skil brand tools. Understanding this about manufacturers now poses the problem, which do you purchase?
Before making any purchases, ask yourself how many times are you going to be using the power tool. If you are buying a power tool for a particular project, and don’t think it is expected to be used a lot past that, then buy your lowest priced tool. When the idea is to use it on a few different jobs, then go with a mid-quality power tool, and if you will be using it a lot, then save yourself a bit of frustration and purchase a brand name tool.
Also, what power tools do you need to buy? When you have no tools, then you have to make several purchases. If you were to go name brand for all of them it could become very expensive really fast. So, you are a better practice to buy discount brand tools, then you can buy all of the power tools you require.
When I began working myself I had to buy a large number of tools and didn’t have the earnings to go name brand. I shopped around and purchased all discount tools. Some I had never heard of, but I needed the tools to do my job. My thinking was that as I earned money, and power tools quit working, I would swap them with name brand power tools. After 8 years of working in building, many of the discount brands are still in use. A discount power tool can get the project completed, and as I have found out they may last a long time.
In the end, it does come down to personal choice whether you are buying name brand power tools or discount tools. Many buyers think the only way to go is to go with a well-known name, although if you shop around and do your due diligence, you will find that a lot of the manufacturers also produce discount brand power tools of good quality. You really are the only one who can make the final decision, but don’t feel you have to spend thousands on a name brand tool when there are so many discount tools offered.
When you are about to purchase employ the rule that name is not as important as getting your DIY project done. Weigh all your factors on name brand power tools and discount power tools and buy the ones that meet your requirements.
