Learn About What Fasteners Are And The Different Types.

A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two objects together; fasteners can be used for many different things including automotive purposes, metals, marine use, and even furniture. Before we go into detail about fasteners, it’s important to know about where they originate. The focus of this article is about metal fasteners, that means they all start of as raw materials. There are many types out there such as Aluminum, Brass, Bronze, Copper, Iron, Steel, Alloy, and titanium, etc.

They are then broken down or cut to smaller portions and made into sockets or etc. There are many different kinds of fasteners available in today’s market but the general ones are screws, nuts, and bolts, sockets, set screws, dowel pins, rods, and even washers. They also come with many different types of heads (the top of screws) such as pan heads, button heads, round heads, truss head, oval heads and a few more. Screws and bolts for example come in various styles and sizes such as inches/metric, thread size, length, and even different types of materials (Steel, stainless steel, brass, silicon bronze, titanium, aluminum and etc). There is also an option to add a “finish” on screws/bolts which is a coating (varies on the consumer), types of finishes are plain, black oxide, zinc, ultra corrosion resistant, and even colors. Every type of screw/ bolt (fastener) has a certain screw drive which varies on the application, a screw drive is a design on top of the head which requires a different kind of tool to drive them in or extract them. A few types of screw drives are slotted, Phillips, square, Robertson, hex, torx, and hex socket. There are certain screw drive types that are preferred where vibrations or tampering are not suitable to the do it yourself type of person.

According to Wikipedia, it is estimated that the United States fastener industry runs 350 manufacturing plants and employs 40,000. The industry is strongly tied to the production of automobiles, aircraft, appliances, agricultural machinery, commercial construction, and infrastructure. More than 200 billion fasteners are used per year in the U.S., with 26 billion by the automotive industry. This gives you a strong example how widely used fasteners are in the U.S and even the world. The need for fastener in the world is beyond belief, there is no way we wont need them anymore as they are apart of every day life. The process of from start to finish with fasteners is never ending and expands to other areas which will be mentioned in other articles. www.SocketCo.com is a wholesaler of fasteners online (including aluminum and raw materials, so feel free to email us with any questions regarding products available and custom fabrication of fasteners.
